Right now, wire is not recommended; the high cleaning standards used by most medical facilities will degrade most metals.  Many of the materials available to home sewers for a metal nose bridge are not suitable for this repeated washing and drying.  Over time, this can make the wire rust or poke through the mask, posing a safety hazard to the wearer.  This decision to eliminate wire came from healthcare provider feedback.
